Street-Involved Youth

Type of Service

Addictions Treatment - Substance Abuse

Program Description

Alternatives for Youth (AY) provides community treatment services to youth 12-22 years of age and those that care about them. An AY substance use counsellor provides formal and drop-in groups, consultation to youth and staff, education, screening, assessment, and counselling services to a number of street-involved youth service providers at their sites. This is an outreach program in the sense the counsellor is at a number of sites weekly; however individual sessions are available.

Access Information

Referrals are completed for youth wanting "treatment services" or whenever clinically indicated. Clients go through regular intake for those who are pursuing service. Many clients are "drop-ins" where there is minimal information collected. Participation thresholds need to be kept very low to engage this population. Many of the youth drop in to see the counsellor when she is at their site. Staff from partner organizations refers youth directly to the Street-Involved Youth worker. Our central intake worker also processes intakes for this program. There are also open drop-in groups regularly at a number of locations.
